Guwahati, Oct 11: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma strongly criticized the Congress party on October 11 for expressing solidarity with Palestine amid the recent conflict involving Hamas militants’ attack on Israel on October 7.
In a post on a social media platform, Sarma made it clear that he saw striking similarities between the Congress’s resolution and statements made by Pakistan and the Taliban.
Congress’s resolution has striking similarities with statements of Pakistan & Taliban
All 3

He outlined these similarities as follows:
- Failure to Condemn Hamas: Sarma pointed out that all three entities, including Congress, did not condemn Hamas, the militant organization responsible for the attacks.
- Neglecting to Deplore the Terrorist Attack on Israel: He highlighted that none of them expressed any disapproval of the terrorist attack on Israel.
- Silence on Hostages, Including Women and Children: Sarma criticized Congress for not addressing the issue of hostages, particularly women and children affected by the conflict.

He accused Congress of prioritizing the politics of appeasement over the nation’s interest, which he suggested was embedded in the party’s DNA.
One specific point from Congress’s resolution that Sarma referred to emphasized their support for the rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to land, self-government, and living with dignity and respect. The resolution also called for an immediate ceasefire and negotiations on all outstanding issues contributing to the ongoing conflict.
By drawing parallels between this point in Congress’s resolution and statements made by Pakistan and the Taliban, Sarma accused the party of endorsing and showing support to Palestine.
This was despite the fact that Hamas, an armed military group based in Palestine, had initiated a surprise attack on Israel, leading to the ongoing conflict. Sarma’s criticism was rooted in the perception that Congress’s stance did not take into account Israel’s security and was aligned with parties that did not condemn terrorism or address the issue of hostages in the conflict.
