Guwahati, Aug 04: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma found himself at the center of controversy after a family photograph posted on social media sparked discussions about the involvement of leaders’ children in right-wing militant outfits.

Responding to the criticism that “Hindu supremacist” leaders send their kids to study abroad and lead luxurious lives, but avoid letting them join organizations like Bajrang Dal, Sarma defended his son’s choices and stated that it is unfair to assume anything about his son’s future decisions.

The incident occurred when a family picture of Sarma celebrating his daughter Riniki’s birthday with a family dinner on July 31st went viral on social media. Academician Ashok Swain commented on the post, accusing Hindu supremacist leaders of sending their children to study abroad and enjoy luxury while refraining from allowing them to join outfits like Bajrang Dal or Durga Vahini, citing the reason ‘Hindus are in danger.’

In response, Chief Minister Sarma expressed surprise at the drastic conclusions drawn from a single family photograph. He clarified that his son is currently 22 years old and is still studying. Sarma asserted that it is unjust to prejudge his son’s choices at such a young age.

Furthermore, the Chief Minister emphasized that joining organizations within the ideological family, commonly referred to as Sangh Parivar, requires hard work and dedication. He stated that merit and dedication should be the primary factors determining entry into these organizations, rather than being the son or daughter of a leader.

Sarma firmly rejected the notion of promoting dynastic succession and urged against providing an easy entry for his son, urging him to earn his place based on merit and dedication.

The incident shed light on a broader discussion about political leaders and their children’s involvement in right-wing groups and organizations. Critics often accuse leaders of preaching one ideology while not encouraging their own children to actively participate in it. Sarma’s response sought to defend his son’s right to make his own choices and emphasized the importance of meritocracy and dedication in joining such organizations.

Political leaders across party lines have long faced scrutiny regarding dynastic politics, where family members of politicians are often given influential positions within the party. However, Sarma’s response underscores the need to judge individuals based on their actions and merits rather than their family background.

The incident has sparked debates on social media and among political commentators, highlighting the complexities surrounding politics and ideology. As discussions continue, it is essential to remember that individual choices and actions should be the basis for evaluating anyone’s involvement in political or social organizations, irrespective of their familial connections. Sarma’s response serves as a reminder that individuals have the agency to shape their own paths and should be evaluated based on their actions and contributions to society.
