Guwahati, March 02: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed the issue of implementing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the state, acknowledging the opposition it faces among certain sections of Assamese society.

He emphasized the need to respect diverse viewpoints on CAA, urging against criticism of either supporters or critics.

Sarma expressed his support for CAA while recognizing the dissent it encounters in Assam.

He stressed the importance of accommodating differing perspectives and suggested that those opposing CAA should seek recourse through legal channels such as the Supreme Court instead of disrupting peace in Assam.

Meanwhile, the All Assam Students Union (AASU) and 30 other organizations announced a series of statewide protests from March 4 onwards against the implementation of CAA.

The planned demonstrations include a bike rally in every district as part of the agitation.

At a press briefing, Samujjal Bhattacharya, the chief advisor of AASU, reiterated the organization’s stance against illegal immigration from Bangladesh and its commitment to safeguarding the interests of indigenous Assamese.

Bhattacharya also warned both the state and central governments against jeopardizing the future of indigenous people.

He criticized the passage of CAA in the Rajya Sabha solely based on vote counts, suggesting that it lacked genuine popular support.

Bhattacharya highlighted ongoing protests and legal challenges across Northeast India as evidence of widespread opposition to CAA, emphasizing the continued resistance against its implementation.
