Assam CM Himanta booked over remarks on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi

Assam, Feb 16: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma defended his comments against Rahul Gandhi, saying that the Congress has created such an ecosystem that one can speak against India but not against the family member of Gandhi.

Addressing a rally in poll-bound Uttarakhand on February 11, Himanta Biswa Sarma had called out Rahul Gandhi for demanding proof of the September 2016 surgical strike and asked if the BJP had ever demanded proof of him being the “son of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi“.

Even as Assam CM received criticism for his remark, the CM stood by his comment. In a series of tweets on Sunday, Himanta Biswa Sarma posted several screenshots of news reports of Congress’s statements on the 2016 surgical strike.

Is it wrong to stand by our great Armed Forces? Let’s not question their patriotism. Don’t seek proof of what they did for the country,” Sarma said in a tweet.

Calling out Rahul Gandhi for his “union of states” remark in Parliament, Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “India is not just a union of states. ‘Bharat‘ is our Maa, not just a motherland. Questioning the jawans is an insult to our Maa.”

On Rahul Gandhi’s statement that Pakistan and China are closer now due to the policies of the Centre, Himanta Biswa Sarma said that Rahul Gandhi should know that Pakistan is close to China since its inception. “He talks in Parliament in such a way that even a class 5 student should not do such a thing,” he said.

Assam CM also alleged that Congress “spared no effort to abuse and accuse General Bipin Rawat. From the day he became Army Chief, they questioned his abilities. But they get irked when I question them for disrespecting our brave soldiers. This is new India. Such an attitude won’t be tolerated anymore.

Telangana Congress has asked its cadre to file a complaint against Himanta Biswa Sarma in all police stations of the state.

On Saturday, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao had demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi must sack Sarma for his remarks on Rahul Gandhi.

Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole had called Sarma’s remark “distasteful” and said it “reflected the culture of the BJP and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh“.

By making such statements, he has shown that his mental balance has deteriorated and he needs to be treated in a good hospital,” the Congress leader said.

Members of the Congress’ youth and student wings had on Saturday held protests in New Delhi and Assam over Sarma’s statements.
