Barpeta, June 28: Assam is grappling with a dire flood situation ahead of the festive occasion of Eid al-Adha. The district of Barpeta has been severely affected, with nearly 70,000 people displaced and 93 villages submerged in floodwaters.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has reported that approximately 225 hectares of cropland in Barpeta district are currently inundated.
Tragically, the floodwaters have claimed the lives of three children in Barpeta district in the past 48 hours, bringing the total death toll in the state to six. The relentless flooding has left communities devastated, and urgent measures are required to address the escalating crisis.
Residents of Shilla village in Barpeta district are facing tremendous hardships as their homes have been engulfed by floodwaters. The impending Eid al-Adha celebrations add an extra layer of difficulty to the already challenging situation.
Even the Eidgah Maidan, where Muslims gather to offer prayers, has been inundated by the floods. The rising water levels have not only disrupted the lives of the affected residents but have also led to an increase in vegetable prices, further exacerbating the plight of the community.
The recurring floods in Assam have become an annual occurrence, wreaking havoc on the lives and livelihoods of thousands of people.
