Guwahati, Aug 14: On August 14, junior doctors and students of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Guwahati, staged a protest against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal.

Dr. Kumarjyoti Deka, President of the Gauhati Medical College Junior Doctor Association, stated that the protest was in solidarity with ongoing demonstrations nationwide.

“This is a solidarity protest. Protests have been happening in West Bengal for the past 3-4 days and across India. Our protest supports those efforts. Our colleague at RG Kar Medical College was assaulted and brutally murdered while on duty. We are here to oppose this heinous act,” Dr. Deka said.

Dr. Deka also urged the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the West Bengal government to take swift action and ensure the accused are brought to justice.

“We request the West Bengal Government and CBI to apprehend the accused as soon as possible and ensure they are punished according to the law,” he added.

Meanwhile, a team of senior CBI officers arrived in Kolkata this morning to investigate the rape and murder case.

The CBI’s involvement follows the Calcutta High Court’s order to transfer the case to the central agency.

According to officials, the team, including medical and forensic experts, will visit the seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital where the trainee doctor’s body was discovered on August 9.
