Guwahati, March 11: The Assam government has announced plans to introduce the Meitei script in educational institutions across the state, aiming to preserve, protect, and promote the linguistic identity of Manipuris.
This initiative will enable interested students to engage with Manipuri literature and pursue higher studies in Manipuri using the Meitei/Mayek script.
Additionally, it will facilitate candidates from Assam to apply for jobs in Manipur that require proficiency in the Meitei/Mayek script.
The decision was made during the state government’s cabinet meeting held on March 10.
In addition to this significant decision, the government has allocated Rs 131 crore for the beautification of the historic Rang Ghar in Sivasagar. The proposed site for this project is Rupohi Pathar, located on the northwestern side of Rang Ghar, covering an area of 83 bighas 2 Katha.

Furthermore, the government has decided to offer a range of incentives to TATA’s semiconductor facility, following the approval of the semiconductor unit in Assam by the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology, Government of India.
The Industries, Commerce, and Public Enterprises Department have been authorized to make payments according to the eligibility criteria outlined in the policy.
In a significant development for the sports sector, the state government has approved Rs 380.66 crore for the construction of an open stadium at Amingaon Sports Complex in Kamrup.
The stadium will feature a state-of-the-art cricket stadium with a seating capacity of 20,000 spectators, along with accommodations for international and national coaches, as well as separate hostels for male and female players.
Additionally, the government has approved amendments to the draft Assam State Prosecution Service (Amendment) Rules, 2024, specifically amending Rules 15 and 19 of the Assam State Prosecution Service Rules, 2023.
These amendments aim to facilitate the smooth and efficient conduct of proficiency-cum-skill tests for the selection of candidates through direct recruitment in various categories of posts.
By introducing the Meitei script in educational institutions and implementing various developmental projects, the Assam government is taking significant strides towards preserving cultural heritage, promoting education, and fostering overall development in the state.
