Guwahati, Jan 08: In a gesture of reverence for the consecration ceremony of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, the Assam government has declared January 22, 2024, as a ‘dry day’ within the state.

This decision, aimed at honoring the significant religious event, was officially communicated by Tourism Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah following a cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The term ‘dry day’ implies a prohibition on the sale of alcohol throughout the entire state on the designated day, emphasizing the solemnity of the occasion.

This measure aligns with the broader sentiment of respect and celebration surrounding the consecration ceremony, which is anticipated to attract attention from devotees and dignitaries alike.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, among other notable figures, is expected to be present at the momentous event.

In solidarity with Assam, the state of Chhattisgarh has also designated January 22 as a ‘dry day,’ reflecting the widespread reverence and acknowledgement of the ceremony’s cultural and spiritual significance.

The Ram Mandir itself, situated in Ayodhya, stands as an architectural marvel, boasting dimensions of 360 feet in length, 235 feet in width, and 161 feet in height.

Notably, the construction of this sacred structure is being undertaken by Larsen & Toubro, who have offered their services pro bono.

The Assam government’s decision to observe a ‘dry day’ forms part of a broader initiative seen across various states, all of which are taking measures to commemorate the inauguration of the Ram Mandir.

This symbolic step reflects the cultural and spiritual unity that the temple represents, underscoring the importance of preserving and celebrating India’s rich religious heritage.
