Guwahati, Oct 28: The Assam Government has launched strict measures to address illegal housing on tea garden land as part of its Mission Bashundhara 3 initiative.

This initiative aims to regularize land occupancy while safeguarding the interests of Indigenous people who have lived on these lands before December 31, 2022.

The new regulations are based on the report from the Justice (Retd.) Biplab Sharma Commission, which advocates a zero-tolerance approach to unauthorized construction in tea plantation areas.

Under these new rules, any new construction on tea garden land will be deemed a criminal offense, highlighting the government’s commitment to preserving these crucial agricultural spaces.

To assist eligible individuals, the government will offer a one-time relief option for those residing on tea garden land before the specified date. These residents can acquire the land by paying a nominal 10% premium.

Importantly, the provisions do not apply to members of the tea plantation community building homes on their land, ensuring that residents are not negatively impacted by the new regulations.
