Assam: Majuli seat, vacated by former CM Sonowal, to head for bypoll on March 7

Assam, Feb 6: Bypoll to fill the Majuli assembly seat in Assam, which was vacated by former chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, will be held on March 7, the Election Commission said on Saturday.

Sonowal, now a Union minister, had resigned from the assembly seat after being elected to the Rajya Sabha last year. The notification for the bypoll will be issued on February 10, according to the schedule announced by the poll panel.

The counting of votes will take place on March 10 along with counting for Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, Punjab and Manipur assembly elections. The five states will go to the polls from February 10 to March 7.

Assam: Bypoll for Majuli Assembly constituency

The Election Commission of India Saturday finally announced voting for the by-elections for Majuli (ST) constituency will be held on March 7, 2022.

The ECI on Saturday announced that the last date of filing nominations is February 17 while the voting will be held on March 7.

Apart from these, the counting of votes will be held on March 10.

The ECI also said that the procedure of the elections will have to be followed under the COVID-19 guidelines.

It may be mentioned that the Majuli constituency seat was won by former Chief Minister and current union minister, Sarbananda Sonowal but after it turned vacant as he was inducted into the PM Modi cabinet.
