1. Abdul Khaleque, Assam’s Barpeta MP, resigns from Congress ahead of Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra conclusion.
2. Congress denied Khaleque the Lok Sabha ticket, fielding Deep Bayan instead for Barpeta.
3. Khaleque’s resignation follows dissatisfaction with Congress’s decision regarding the Barpeta Lok Sabha ticket.
Guwahati, March 15: Abdul Khaleque, the current Member of Parliament from Assam’s Barpeta Lok Sabha constituency, announced his resignation from the primary membership of the Congress party just two days before the conclusion of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.
Khaleque’s decision came after the Congress party denied him the Lok Sabha ticket for the upcoming elections, opting instead to field Deep Bayan, the President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Sevadal, from the Barpeta constituency.
The denial of the ticket to Khaleque is believed to be the primary reason for his resignation, as he expressed dissatisfaction with the party’s treatment of the Muslim community in Assam.
In a letter addressed to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Khaleque highlighted his long-standing association with the party and his admiration for its historical leaders.
However, he lamented the party’s recent neglect of people-centric issues in Assam, attributing it to the approach taken by the state president and the AICC general secretary in charge.
