Guwahati, June 16: In a united display of dissent, twelve opposition parties in Assam came together to stage a protest in Guwahati, seeking the arrest of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The parties alleged that Sarma had connections with Kuki militant groups in Manipur. This joint demonstration underscores the growing political tension and calls for accountability in the state.

Leaders representing the Congress, Asom Jatiya Parishad, Raijor Dol, CPI, CPI(M), CPI(ML), Trinamool Congress, NCP, RJD, JD(U), AAP, and Jatiya Dal Assam assembled to voice their concerns over the alleged association between Himanta Biswa Sarma and Kuki militant groups.

They accused Sarma of seeking assistance from these groups during the 2017 Assembly elections in Manipur, which ultimately led to the formation of the BJP’s first government in the state.

During the protest, opposition leaders called for the immediate arrest of Himanta Biswa Sarma under the provisions of the National Security Act.

They contended that if the convener of the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) is connected to extremist organizations, it indicates his support for the operation of terrorists in the northeastern states. Additionally, they demanded Sarma’s resignation as the NEDA convener.

Ripun Bora, the Assam Trinamool Congress president, emphasized the seriousness of the allegations and the need for swift action. He stated that Sarma’s alleged involvement with extremist groups undermines the security and stability of the region.

Bora urged Sarma to step down from his position as NEDA convener, highlighting the responsibility that comes with such a significant role in the alliance.
