Guwahati, June 23: In a recent development, Assam police have successfully apprehended a 23-year-old man in Guwahati for his alleged involvement in eloping with and marrying a minor girl. Authorities confirmed the arrest and stated that further investigations are underway.

After the incident came to light, the family of the minor promptly filed a complaint, initiating a search for the suspect who had been on the run since then, as stated by a police official.

The police received a tip-off regarding the movement of the accused youth in the Gotanagar area of Guwahati. Acting swiftly upon the information, law enforcement launched an operation leading to the successful arrest of the suspect from a residence in the aforementioned area.

During the subsequent interrogation, the accused individual admitted to marrying the minor girl and clarified that the two were in hiding to avoid arrest. The police are diligently investigating the matter to ascertain whether it constitutes a case of child marriage.

Regardless of the outcome, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act will be applicable, as affirmed by the police official.
