Assam planting

Guwahati, Sept 14: Assam is embarking on an attempt to secure a Guinness World Record by planting an astounding one crore (ten million) saplings in just two hours. The ambitious endeavour is slated to take place on September 17, 2023, and represents a remarkable milestone in the state’s journey towards fostering a tree-based economy.

To kickstart this monumental tree-planting mission, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma led the planting of ten lakh (one million) saplings at Bhairabkunda in Udalguri. His participation symbolized the state’s unwavering commitment to this green revolution.

This grand endeavor goes beyond merely securing a Guinness World Record; it represents Assam’s resolute dedication to championing the value of trees in economic sustainability. Trees are the cornerstone of a green economy, contributing to environmental conservation and enhancing the quality of life for all.

But Assam’s ambitious plan doesn’t end with the Chief Minister’s symbolic gesture. On September 17, approximately 40 lakh members of women’s self-help groups from every corner of the state will each plant two commercially viable saplings. This collective effort alone will contribute an astonishing 80 lakh saplings to the record-breaking plantation drive.

The remaining 20 lakh or more saplings will be planted by individuals from diverse backgrounds, including Anganwadi workers, tea garden laborers, government officials, police and forest battalions, and the general public of Assam. This inclusivity underscores the collaborative spirit of the initiative, highlighting that everyone, regardless of their role in society, has a vital part to play in environmental stewardship.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared his excitement for this monumental endeavor on social media, stating, “After the Guinness World Records for Bihu, Assam has accomplished another world record – the largest plantation drive. Plantation of 10 lakh saplings at 1,000 bighas of land in 24 hours!”

The Assam government’s active involvement in planting the first sapling serves as a symbol of unwavering commitment to this historic undertaking. The mission is clear: to plant ten lakh saplings across an expansive area spanning over 1000 bighas of land within a remarkably short timeframe of 24 hours.
