Guwahati, March 03: Assam’s first transgender advocate, Swati Bidhan Baruah, was sent to Central Jail on March 3 following allegations of influencing a young man, Mansoor Alam, to take drastic measures, as confirmed by a senior advocate.

Baruah’s arrest on March 1, 2024, marked a significant turn of events, leading to chaos as her workplace was reportedly vandalized by a crowd upon her detention.

The situation unfolded when Baruah accused Mansoor, a 20-year-old resident of Pandu and her office colleague, of rape.

Subsequently, Mansoor was taken into custody, although he had secured bail just days before the new allegations emerged.

The case took a tragic turn when Mansoor’s family claimed that Baruah was pressuring him into marriage, exacerbating an already tense situation.

Struggling financially to afford legal representation for Mansoor, his family faced societal stigma and familial pressures, ultimately resulting in Mansoor’s decision to take his own life.

According to reports, a police officer from the Jalukbari police station stated, “Mansoor’s mother filed a complaint attributing her son’s death to Swati. The victim’s family asserts that Mansoor was facing pressure to marry. Swati Bidhan Baruah has been arrested and forwarded to court.”

As of the report submission, Baruah’s case has been referred to court.

Apart from her legal contributions, Swati Bidhan Baruah has made history by serving as a Lok Adalat judge and actively advocating for human rights.

She has also played a significant role in establishing support groups for transgender individuals, working towards fostering a more inclusive society.
