At least 200 BJP workers return to TMC; shave their heads, sprinkle Gangajal to atone

Bengal, June 22: At least 200 Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers in West Bengal’s Hooghly district returned to the Trinamool Congress (TMC) after ‘purifying’ themselves with Gangajal.

The party workers claimed that it was a mistake to join BJP. They shaved their heads and sprinkled Gangajal to “atone” for their mistake and returned to the TMC after being “purified”.

BJP workers held the TMC flag in Hooghly and joined hands with Arambagh MP Aparupa Poddar.

TMC MP Aparupa Poddar said that the party had organized a program on Tuesday to provide free food to the poor in Arambagh.

Aparupa Poddar claimed that during this program, some people from the Dalit community came and said that they had made a mistake by joining the BJP. They wanted to rejoin TMC after atoning for their mistake.

Since the TMC’s victory in the recently held assembly elections, hundreds of activists are returning to the party in several districts of West Bengal.

Earlier this month, over 50 BJP workers in West Bengal’s Birbhum was re-inducted into the Trinamool Congress Party after they staged a dharna outside the TMC office, demanding that be taken back. The activists had claimed that they regretted switching camps.

The BJP has, however, described this exodus of party workers as a result of the violence that was unleashed in the state following the declaration of election results.

According to the BJP, the workers are being forced to rejoin the ruling party due to fear for themselves and their family.
