Bharat Modi

New Delhi, Sept 09: Amid ongoing discussions about renaming India, the nameplate in front of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G20 Summit in New Delhi displayed ‘Bharat’ as the country’s name. During his inaugural address at the summit, PM Modi was also recognized as the leader representing ‘Bharat,’ signifying a conscious decision by the government to emphasize this name alongside ‘India.’

Videos and photographs shared widely on social media depicted a placard that prominently read ‘Bharat’ as Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the summit attendees.

PM Modi highlighted India’s G20 Presidency as a symbol of ‘Sabka Sath’ (together with everyone) both within the country and internationally. He noted that this presidency had transformed into a people’s G20 event in India, with over 200 meetings taking place across the nation.

The government’s choice to use ‘Bharat’ in official G20 documents is deliberate and meaningful, according to official sources.

Before delivering his inaugural address, Prime Minister Modi extended a warm welcome to numerous world leaders, including US President Joe Biden and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, at the Bharat Mandapam, the venue for the G20 Summit.

Among the first dignitaries to arrive at the newly constructed venue in Pragati Maidan were UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director and Chairman Kristalina Georgieva, and World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. Modi welcomed these global leaders against the backdrop of a replica of the Konark Wheel, a 13th-century artifact symbolizing time, progress, and perpetual change.

This deliberate use of ‘Bharat’ alongside ‘India’ in official documents and nameplates holds significance, as it reflects India’s historical and cultural heritage. The name ‘Bharat’ has ancient roots and is deeply woven into the country’s identity. The decision to prominently feature it at a global platform like the G20 Summit is a strong assertion of India’s rich heritage and its commitment to preserving and honoring its traditions.

While discussions about renaming India have been ongoing, this move emphasizes the dual identity of the nation, acknowledging its ancient name ‘Bharat’ alongside ‘India.’ It sends a powerful message that India is proud of its heritage and is determined to showcase it on the world stage.

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi leads India on the global platform, the name ‘Bharat’ serves as a reminder of the country’s deep-rooted culture and history. It underscores the importance of recognizing and celebrating India’s multifaceted identity while engaging with the international community.
