Shillong, April 09: Meghalaya’s cabinet minister and BJP leader, Al Hek, recently declared significant progress in resolving the longstanding Assam-Meghalaya border dispute, stating that approximately 80 percent of the contentious issues have been successfully addressed.

According to Hek, the remaining 20 percent of the dispute will be tackled through mutually agreeable solutions, fostering a spirit of cooperation between the two states.

The border discord, spanning five decades, primarily concerns 12 points along the 885 km border between Assam and Meghalaya, encompassing regions such as Upper Tarabari, Gazang Reserve Forest, Hahim, and Langpih.

To date, both states have reached agreements to settle disputes concerning six sectors, signifying significant strides towards resolution.

The dispute traces back to 1972, following Meghalaya’s formation from Assam, and has been marred by periodic clashes resulting in casualties.

In recent years, tensions flared, leading to tragic incidents.

In November 2022, six individuals lost their lives in border confrontations, underscoring the urgency of resolving the dispute.

On September 26, 2023, further skirmishes erupted, fortunately resulting in no reported injuries.
