Odisha

1. Odisha’s BJD-BJP alliance talks in Delhi have stalled, suggesting an independent contest in forthcoming elections.
2. Differences over key constituencies have led to an impasse in the alliance discussions.
3. Both parties may now opt to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha and state assembly elections separately.

Bhubeaswear, March 09: The anticipated alliance discussions between Odisha’s ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have hit an impasse, raising the prospect of both parties contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha and state assembly elections separately.

The talks, held in Delhi, failed to resolve differences over crucial constituencies, leading to an unexpected stand-off.

BJP Eyes Solo Contest

Following their return to Bhubaneswar, BJP state president Manmohan Samal hinted at the BJP’s intention to field candidates in all 147 assembly and 21 Lok Sabha constituencies in Odisha. Samal clarified that the discussions in Delhi were solely focused on election preparations, with no mention of alliance or seat-sharing arrangements.

Historical Context and Seat Distribution

Speculations arise as the BJD-BJP alliance talks hit hurdles primarily over seat-sharing ratios. Disagreements emerged as the BJD sought over 100 seats in the 147-member Odisha Assembly, while the BJP demanded 14 out of the 21 Lok Sabha seats in Odisha.

State Unit vs Central Leadership

Despite a series of meetings between Odisha BJP leaders and central leaders in Delhi, no conclusive decision was reached. The dynamics of the alliance talks shifted following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the state, with varying opinions within the Odisha BJP leadership regarding an alliance.

Previous Seat-sharing Ratio and Political Fallout

The breakdown in alliance talks recalls the collapse of the BJD-BJP alliance in 2009, attributed to failed seat-sharing negotiations. Once considered a reliable ally, the alliance crumbled over the BJD’s demand for a reduction in the BJP’s share of seats, marking the end of an 11-year political partnership.

While the BJD and BJP have a history of alliances, the current impasse underscores the complexities of coalition politics. With both parties preparing for solo contests, the electoral landscape in Odisha is set for an intriguing battle in the upcoming polls.
