It’s important to note that the Union cabinet had previously approved an increase in the cooking gas subsidy from Rs 200 to Rs 300 per cylinder for approximately 96 million low-income households on October 4. This decision was made ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in five states and the upcoming national elections next year.

Furthermore, the government recently sanctioned the expansion of the PM Ujjwala Yojana scheme, with the aim of adding 7.5 million more women beneficiaries. This expansion is part of a broader strategy to reach a total of 103.5 million beneficiaries within the next three years.

In a related development, on August 29, the Union Cabinet reduced the price of a 14.2 kg LPG cooking gas cylinder by Rs 200 as a special gesture for women in anticipation of Raksha Bandhan, a move that was undertaken in response to concerns about rising inflation.
