Guwahati, Feb 14: On February 14, Congress MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha resigned from his position as the Working President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC).

In a letter addressed to APCC President Bhupen Borah, Dey stated his decision to step down from the role and continue serving as a primary member of the Congress party.

“I do hereby resign from the post of Working President, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee with immediate effect and continue the work only as a Primary member of the Congress party,” expressed Dey in his letter.

Earlier the same day, Congress MLAs Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha and Basanta Das met and extended their support to Assam Chief Minister.

Both MLAs have aligned themselves with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Assam Legislative Assembly, adding to the challenges faced by the Congress in the state.

The Congress has been grappling with defections to the BJP in the lead-up to the Lok Sabha elections.

In a notable incident on January 28, Angkita Dutta, the expelled president of Assam Youth Congress, along with former MLA Bismita Gogoi, joined the BJP, levelling various allegations against the Congress leadership, particularly targeting Rahul Gandhi.

Furthermore, recent changes in the stance of Pradyut Bordoloi, the sitting MP of Nagaon, have fueled speculation about his potential replacement by Gaurav Gogoi and a potential shift to the BJP.

Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha’s decision to support the Assam Chief Minister indicates a growing trend of Congress members crossing over to the BJP in Assam, further exacerbating the challenges faced by the Congress party in the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections.
