2. Bordoloi alleges Sarma promised Rs 10,000 to all ration cardholders post-election.
3. Complaint filed with chief election commissioner, citing unethical voter influence.

Guwahati, April 10: Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi, contesting from Nagaon constituency of Assam, has accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of violating the model code of conduct (MCC) during the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

Bordoloi complained with the chief election commissioner, alleging that Sarma promised to transfer Rs 10,000 to the bank accounts of all ration cardholders post-election, a move deemed unethical and aimed at influencing voters.

Terming Sarma’s promises as a “clear violation” of the MCC, Bordoloi urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to thoroughly investigate the matter and take necessary action against the chief minister.

Additionally, Bordoloi filed another complaint with the chief electoral officer, accusing the BJP of continuing a controversial socio-economic survey despite a show-cause notice from the CEO.

The survey, alleged to be conducted for electoral gains under the guise of the ‘Orunodoi’ cash direct benefit transfer (DBT) scheme, has raised concerns about the misuse of government schemes for electoral purposes.

The Election Department issued a show-cause notice to the state BJP unit following allegations of MCC violation by the CPI(M), highlighting the party’s collection of data under the pretext of the socio-economic survey to increase beneficiaries under government schemes.

The notice requires a response from the state BJP unit by April 8, addressing the allegations raised regarding the misuse of government resources for electoral benefits.
