Kolkata, Feb 20: A contentious incident during a BJP march to Sandeshkhali in West Bengal has sparked a political feud, with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accusing the BJP of targeting the Sikh community by allegedly taunting a turbaned Sikh police officer as a “Khalistani.” The BJP denies the allegation, claiming that no such remark was made.

Mamata Banerjee’s Allegations and BJP’s Response

Mamata Banerjee took to social media to share a video showing the Sikh police officer reacting to the alleged taunt. She accused the BJP of disrespecting the Sikh community and emphasized the significance of religious tolerance.

However, the BJP leader, Agnimitra Paul, dismissed Banerjee’s claims, asserting that no one called the officer a Khalistani. Paul accused Banerjee of diverting attention from the Sandeshkhali incident, focusing instead on the arrest of Shahjahan Sheikh, the accused perpetrator.

Mamata Banerjee’s Critique of BJP’s Politics

Mamata Banerjee condemned the BJP’s alleged divisive tactics, accusing the party of crossing constitutional boundaries. She expressed solidarity with the Sikh community, denouncing attempts to tarnish their reputation based on their religious attire.

Banerjee vowed to protect Bengal’s social harmony and pledged lawful measures to prevent any disruption.

Congress’s Condemnation of BJP’s Behavior

Echoing Banerjee’s sentiments, the Congress criticized the BJP’s conduct, labeling it as degrading. They highlighted the irony of labeling a dedicated police officer as a Khalistani merely because of his turban.

The incident underscores the need to address such derogatory behavior and uphold respect for all communities.

The incident in Sandeshkhali highlights the fragility of social harmony amid political tensions. It serves as a reminder of the importance of religious tolerance and respect for diversity.

Moving forward, political leaders must prioritize unity over divisiveness and work towards fostering a climate of mutual respect and understanding.
