The most well-known Bihu, Rongali Bihu, also known as Bohag Bihu, marks the beginning of the Assamese New Year and the arrival of spring. Bohag Bihu, which derives its name from the term “Rong” or color, is thought to be the most significant of the three Bihu festivals because it represents joy.
It typically lasts for seven days and is a time of joy and eating. The farmers are happy as they ready the fields for the cultivation of paddy. The women prepare pitha, larus (traditional fare made of rice and coconut), as well as a variety of drinks prepared by local tribes like the Deoris’ Chuje, the Tai-Ahoms’ Nam-Lao, the Misings’ Aapong, and the Jolpan, which capture the true spirit of the season.
Bihu geets or Bihu songs are the names for the folk songs connected with the Bohag Bihu. Different demographic groups have distinct celebration and ritual forms.
Rongali Bihu is one of the important attractions for tourists also.
