G20 Summit

New Delhi, Sept 06: As the G20 summit approaches, the Delhi government has taken significant steps to ensure the smooth conduct of this international event. In a recent gazette notification issued, the government has outlined traffic restrictions that will be in effect during the summit, scheduled to take place from September 8th to September 10th, 2023. These restrictions are aimed at minimizing inconvenience to motorists and other road users while accommodating the unique needs of the G20 summit.

The notification specifies that various categories of vehicles, including goods vehicles, commercial vehicles, interstate buses, and local city buses (such as Delhi Transport Corporation or DTC buses and Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System or DIMTS buses), will not be permitted to operate on several key roads in New Delhi and surrounding areas. These restrictions will be in place from the intervening night of September 7th and 8th until 23:59 hours on September 10th, 2023.

The affected roads include:

  1. Mathura Road (beyond Ashram Chowk)
  2. Bhairon Road
  3. Purana Quila Road
  4. Inside Pragati Maidan Tunnel

These restrictions are essential to ensure the smooth conduct of the G20 Summit, which will be held at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. They aim to minimize traffic disruptions and enhance security measures during this high-profile international event.

Additionally, the notification highlights the need to regulate vehicular movement on roads in the New Delhi District and surrounding areas, extending up to the Eastern and Western Peripheral Expressways. To this end, the Delhi government has invoked Section 115 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, to lay down these necessary restrictions.

  3. Exceptions will be made for goods vehicles carrying essential commodities, including milk, vegetables, fruits, and medical supplies, provided they have valid “no-entry permissions.”
  4. The entire area of New Delhi district will be designated as “Controlled Zone-I” from the morning of September 8th to September 10th, 2023. Only bona fide residents, authorized vehicles, and vehicles involved in housekeeping, catering, waste management, and essential services for hotels, hospitals, and other critical installations in the district will be allowed to travel on specific roads.
  5. Temporary restrictions on auto-rickshaws (TSRs) and taxis will be in place in the New Delhi district from 05:00 hours on September 9th, 2023, to 23:59 hours on September 10th, 2023. However, commercial vehicles, including buses already present in Delhi, will be allowed to move on Ring Road and beyond Ring Road towards the city’s borders.
  6. Taxis carrying bona fide residents and tourists with valid hotel bookings in the New Delhi district, who intend to go to the New Delhi railway station, will be permitted to operate within the district.

Vehicles belonging to the armed forces, paramilitary forces, police, disaster management, fire tenders, ambulances, and those engaged in emergency services (such as road maintenance, electric supply, water and sewage line maintenance, and communication network maintenance) will be exempt from these restrictions and allowed to move throughout Delhi.

These traffic restrictions are a critical component of ensuring the safety and success of the G20 Summit in New Delhi. While they may inconvenience some commuters temporarily, they are essential to facilitate the smooth operation of this high-level international gathering, and they reflect the government’s commitment to hosting the event successfully.
