Earthquake of magnitude 6.1 hits Mizoram, tremors felt in Bangladesh & Kolkata

Mizoram, Nov 26: An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale hit Thenzawl in Mizoram in the wee hours of Friday.

According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake hit Mizoram at around 5:15 am.

No casualties have been reported yet.

According to witness accounts posted on European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre’s (EMSC) website and by users on Twitter, it was felt in Chittagong in Bangladesh and as far away as the East Indian city of Kolkata, some 280 miles (450.62 km) from Aizawl.

Very strong,” one such witness posted on EMSC from Chittagong, which is about 184 km (115 miles) west of the quake’s epicentre.

according to EMSC and India’s earthquake monitoring agency, the tremors were felt across states in northeastern India and major cities in Bangladesh.

EMSC pegged the temblor’s magnitude at 5.8, after having earlier given it a magnitude of 6.0.

On November 20, an earthquake measuring 4.1 magnitudes on the Richter Scale had jolted Guwahati and other parts of Assam. The earthquake was reported at 1:12 pm and the depth of the quake was 10 km, according to the NCS.

The NCS said the epicentre was at a location 38 km West-Southwest of Guwahati in Assam’s Kamrup (Metro) district.
