California, Jan 30: Elon Musk’s brain-chip startup Neuralink successfully implanted a brain chip into a human patient. Elon Musk revealed on social media platform X that the first human recipient is recovering well, and initial results indicate promising neuron spike detection.

Neuron spikes refer to activities by neurons, which are cells that utilize electrical and chemical signals to transmit information within the brain and to the body, according to the National Institute of Health.

Last year, the US Food and Drug Administration granted Neuralink clearance for its first human trial to test the brain-chip implant. In September, the company received approval to recruit participants for the trial focused on paralysis patients.

Neuralink’s study involves the use of a robot for surgically placing a brain-computer interface (BCI) implant in a brain region responsible for the intention to move.

The primary objective is to enable individuals to control a computer cursor or keyboard using their thoughts alone. The implant features “ultra-fine” threads to transmit signals within participants’ brains.

Elon Musk referred to the first product from Neuralink as “Telepathy” in a separate post on X. The startup’s PRIME Study, designed to evaluate the safety of the wireless brain-computer interface implant and surgical robot, marks a significant step in advancing this technology.

However, Neuralink has not provided further details in response to a Reuters request.

Despite its groundbreaking work, Neuralink has faced scrutiny over safety protocols. Earlier this month, Reuters reported that the company was fined for violating US Department of Transportation rules regarding the movement of hazardous materials.

In November, four lawmakers urged the US Securities and Exchange Commission to investigate whether Musk misled investors about the safety of Neuralink’s technology. Veterinary records revealed issues with monkey implants, including paralysis, seizures, and brain swelling.
