3. Cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal to bring increased moisture and cloudy skies from December 22.

Kolkata, Dec 20: The days leading up to Christmas have brought chilly weather to Kolkata, but there’s a forecasted change on December 25, with a potential increase in temperatures by a couple of notches, according to the Meteorological office.

A cyclonic circulation forming over the Bay of Bengal is expected to contribute to an increase in moisture from December 22, leading to cloudy skies in Kolkata. By December 25, the minimum temperature is anticipated to rise to around 17 degrees Celsius.

For almost a week, the minimum temperature in Kolkata has hovered between 14 and 15 degrees. Winter in Kolkata tends to be characterized by fluctuations as it is positioned between Western Disturbances in the north and Bay systems in the south.

When either system develops, there is an uptick in moisture, resulting in a rise in minimum temperatures, explained Sanjib Bandyopadhyay, Deputy Director-General of the India Meteorological Department, Alipore.

On Sunday, the temperature in Kolkata dipped to 13.7 degrees, marking the lowest of the season so far. As of Tuesday, it stood at 15.1 degrees, which is normal for this time of the year.

The day temperatures have also been on the lower side over the past week, with strong northwesterly winds contributing to the chill. These winds have a clear passage from Kashmir to Kolkata, passing through Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand.

However, meteorologists expect a gradual change in conditions, and the first cold spell of this winter is likely to be interrupted soon.
