Manipur internet

Imphal, July 06: The Manipur government has decided to extend the ban on internet services in the state until July 10, 2023. This decision comes as a preventive measure to address the imminent threat of loss of life, damage to public and private property, and disturbances to public tranquility.

The Manipur Home Department issued an order stating the need to ensure the peaceful co-existence and maintenance of public order.

Under the authority granted by Rule 2 of the Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules, 2017, the official notification stated, “Further suspension/curbing of mobile data services, internet/data services including broadband viz, Reliance Jio Fibre, Airtel Xtreme Black, BSNL FTTH, VPN, etc., and internet/data services through VSATS of Bharatnet Phase-II in the territorial jurisdiction of the State of Manipur.”

The order will be in effect for the next five days, starting immediately from the time the suspension order becomes operational, and will continue until 3:00 pm on July 10.

The notification also highlighted concerns about the potential misuse of social media platforms by anti-social elements to transmit images, spread hate speech, and share provocative video messages. Such activities have the potential to incite public sentiments and may have serious repercussions on the law and order situation in Manipur.

In another development, schools under the Department of Education (Schools) of the Manipur government reopened and resumed normal classes for students in Classes 1-8 after a closure of more than two months. This decision was taken to prioritize the welfare of the students, and it has been welcomed by parents and guardians who are pleased to see the schools reopen after a prolonged summer vacation.

The ethnic violence that erupted in Manipur on May 3 triggered the closure of schools and led to significant disruptions in the state. The violence stemmed from clashes during a rally organized by the All Tribal Students Union (ATSU) to protest against the demand for including Meiteis in the list of Scheduled Tribes (STs).

As a result of the conflict, many people were forced to seek shelter in relief camps, and the unfortunate events claimed the lives of more than 130 individuals.

The extension of the internet ban reflects the government’s efforts to restore peace and maintain public order in Manipur.

However, it also highlights the ongoing challenges and tensions that need to be addressed to ensure the safety and well-being of the people in the state. The reopening of schools is a positive step towards normalcy and signifies the commitment to prioritize the education and future of the students in Manipur. The authorities will continue to monitor the situation closely and take necessary measures to foster a peaceful environment for all residents of the state.
