FIR against Assam Teacher for posting 'objectionable' photo of PM Modi

Assam, Jan 17: An FIR has been lodged against a college teacher in Silchar Assam for an “objectionable” social media post related to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Haryana Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala.

One Snehangshu Chakraborty, who is a leader of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), lodged the FIR with the Silchar Sadar Police Station against Tamojit Saha. The accused teaches Bengali at a junior college in the southern Assam city.

According to the complaint lodged with Silchar Sadar police station by Snehangshu Bhattacharjee, the president of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Gurucharan College unit on January 16, Tamojit Saha, a teacher at Ramanuj Gupta Junior College, has been “spreading disrespect and hate” against the Prime Minister and the Haryana politicians on social media.

The complainant alleged that Tamojit posted a photo on Facebook with a caption in Bengali – “Impact of farmers’ movement in Haryana,” and that the post contained the images of the Prime Minister and the Haryana leaders with a garland of shoes around them.

A case was registered under Sections 294 (obscene acts and songs) and 501 (printing or engraving matter known to be defamatory) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 67 (publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form) of the Information Technology Act.

The police said they were probing the case against the Assam teacher. The accused was yet to be arrested.

The complainant as well as the members of ABVP demanded action against the teacher. They said he had demeaned Modi and the two Haryana politicians with his offensive post.
