Fire breaks out on 13th floor of Railways building in Kolkata

Kolkata, March 8: A fire broke out on the 13th floor of a multi-storeyed building in Kolkata on Monday evening. The fire brigade is on the spot and efforts are underway to douse the blaze on Strand Road.

Initial statements by the authorities suggest that no injuries have been reported so far. The New Koilaghat building on Kolkata’s Strand Road, where the fire broke out on Monday, houses offices of the Railways.

Kolkata Police was first alerted about the fire at 6.10 pm Monday. At least 10 fire engines were rushed to the spot and are still working to get the situation under control, a Fire Brigade official said.

The cause of the fire at the New Koilaghat building is yet to be ascertained.

Eastern Railway spokesperson Kamal Deo confirmed that the New Koilaghat building on Kolkata’s Strand Road houses offices of the Eastern Railway and the South Eastern Railway. It also has a computerized ticket booking centre on its ground floor.
