Colombo, Feb 12: Following its launch in France last week, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is set to expand its reach to Sri Lanka and Mauritius today, marking another milestone for Indian digital payment services.

Additionally, RuPay cards will also be introduced in Mauritius as part of this initiative.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually join Mauritian Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth and Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe for the launch event scheduled at 1 pm.

This move is expected to strengthen digital connectivity between India and these countries, leveraging the robust cultural and people-to-people linkages shared among them.

The launch of UPI services in Sri Lanka and Mauritius is poised to benefit a wide cross-section of individuals by offering a faster and more seamless digital transaction experience.

Indians visiting these countries will be able to utilize UPI for payments, while Mauritian travelers to India will also have access to this convenient payment method.

Furthermore, the extension of RuPay services will empower Mauritian banks to issue RuPay cards, facilitating settlements both in India and Mauritius.

The launch of UPI at the Eiffel Tower in Paris during the Republic Day reception marked a significant step towards PM Modi’s vision of globalizing UPI.

UPI, a mobile-based payment system in India, facilitates round-the-clock payments via virtual payment addresses, consolidating multiple bank accounts into a single app and offering various banking features under one platform.
