Imphal, Oct 01: In the case of the brutal murder of two students in Manipur in June, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested four individuals and detained two others. The victims’ photographs recently surfaced on social media, reigniting the investigation.

Among those apprehended are two men and two women, while the two detained individuals are young girls currently held in Imphal, the state capital.

The suspects were apprehended in the hill district of Churachandpur, located approximately 51 kilometers from Imphal. This district had been marred by ethnic violence since May 3.

Colonel (retired) Nectar Sanjenbam, recently appointed as the Senior Superintendent (Combat) of Police for a five-year term, spearheaded the operation that led to the arrests. The operation was shrouded in secrecy and aimed at capturing the suspects hiding in Churachandpur. This district is home to several Kuki insurgent groups that have previously entered into a Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement.

Manipur CM N Biren Singh shared the news on Twitter and wrote, “I’m pleased to share that some of the main culprits responsible for the abduction and murder of Phijam Hemanjit and Hijam Linthoingambi have been arrested from Churachandpur today. As the saying goes, one may abscond after committing the crime, but they cannot escape the long hands of the law. We are committed to ensuring maximum punishment, including capital punishment, for the heinous crime they have committed.”

Colonel Sanjenbam, who has a distinguished background in the 21 Para (Special Forces), utilized his expertise and experience to lead this operation.

The arrests and detentions represent a significant development in the ongoing investigation into the murders that shocked Manipur. The victims, two students, were brutally killed earlier this year, and their case has garnered widespread attention and public outrage.

The emergence of their photographs on social media platforms reignited interest in the case and prompted the CBI to intensify its efforts to apprehend the culprits responsible for the heinous crime.

The apprehension of these suspects, combined with the ongoing investigation, may shed more light on the circumstances surrounding the murders and bring justice to the victims and their families. The investigation is expected to continue, with authorities working diligently to uncover all the facts and evidence related to this tragic case.
