Shillong, Dec 16: Customs officers in Shillong foiled a significant gold smuggling attempt after intercepting a Maruti EECO van at Diengpasoh on the outskirts of Shillong, based on specific intelligence.

During interrogation, officers discovered foreign-origin gold concealed in a specially designed compartment in the middle seat’s floor area.

The smuggled gold, comprising 20 pieces wrapped in black tape and divided into four packets, weighed a total of 2331.82 grams.

The estimated value of the seized gold is Rs 1.42 crore. Following the operation, one individual has been arrested, and investigations are currently underway to unveil further details about the smuggling network.

In a separate incident, Customs officials seized 50 bags of Chinese garlic with a total weight of 950 kg. The garlic, bearing the brand name HUAGUANG, is suspected to have been smuggled across the border.
