Guwahati, Feb 10: In a concerning trend, affluent youth in Guwahati are increasingly indulging in illegal modifications of their luxury vehicles, influenced by the power and wealth of their parents.

Guwahati Police recently seized several such vehicles, including three Innovas, three Scorpios, one Thar, and one Alcazar, all fitted with illegal sirens and lights.

The crackdown comes in the wake of a tragic hit-and-run incident reported on January 26, where a 20-year-old driver, Arin Kakati, allegedly ran over a 54-year-old man who later succumbed to his injuries.

Despite the severity of the incident, no action was taken by the police until February 09, raising concerns about law enforcement’s response to such cases.

It’s worth noting that many individuals, often children of influential figures, flaunt vehicles registered under the Government of Assam, despite lacking any official affiliation.

These vehicles are equipped with unauthorized sirens and lights, posing a serious threat to public safety.

Moreover, some of these affluent youngsters go a step further by posting photos on social media brandishing firearms, which they often borrow from their government-appointed security personnel for photo shoots.

This reckless behavior not only violates legal regulations but also undermines the rule of law and public order.

The prevalence of such illegal modifications highlights the need for stricter enforcement measures and greater accountability among the privileged class.

Law enforcement agencies must take swift and decisive action against offenders to prevent further incidents of reckless driving and disregard for traffic regulations.

Furthermore, parents and guardians must instil a sense of responsibility and respect for the law in their children, discouraging them from engaging in activities that endanger public safety and tarnish the reputation of the community.

By addressing the root causes of this behavior and promoting a culture of compliance, Guwahati can strive towards safer roads and a more law-abiding society.
