Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati, Feb 01: Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma succeeded Sarbanada Sonowal as the 15th Chief Minister of Assam and took the oath on 10 May 2021.

Elected for the first time in 2001 from the Jalukbari constituency, he has since then been representing the constituency in the Assam Legislative Assembly by winning five consecutive elections – 2001, 2006, 2011, 2016, and 2021.

Sarma, who crossed over from Congress before the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, more than equaled chief minister Sonowal in influence and prominence.

Regarded as a big factor in the party’s wins in the 2016 polls and 2019 Lok Sabha polls as well as the handling of the challenges of the anti-CAA agitation and the pandemic, the former congress leader is also the spearhead of the party’s effort to increase its presence in the north-east.
