Ranchi, Feb 03: Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader Hemant Soren, facing arrest in connection with an alleged land scam, has been granted permission to participate in the trust vote scheduled for February 5 and 6 in the state Assembly.

The special court in Ranchi granted former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren permission to participate in the trust vote after he filed a petition before the special PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act) court.

Hemant Soren was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday in a money laundering case. The court had remanded him to ED custody for five days on Friday.

The trust vote was sought by the new Champai Soren government, formed after Hemant Soren named Champai Soren as his successor on January 31, just hours before his arrest by the ED. Champai Soren was subsequently sworn in as the new Jharkhand Chief Minister on February 2.

Following his swearing-in, Champai Soren was given 10 days to prove a majority in the Assembly.

To secure majority support, the Champai Soren-led government needs to reach the 41-mark in the Assembly. Hemant Soren, the JMM leader, has claimed the support of 43 MLAs.

In a political development, approximately 40 MLAs from the ruling JMM-led alliance were transported to Hyderabad on Friday amid concerns that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) might attempt to lure them away in the lead-up to the trust vote.

The shift of MLAs to Hyderabad added another layer of complexity to the political situation in Jharkhand.
