Kolkata, Feb 20: The Calcutta High Court’s division bench granted BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari permission to visit Sandeshkhali amidst reports of sexual violence against women and land-grabbing.

Adhikari, stopped by police despite earlier clearance from a single-judge bench, is now allowed to visit the area under certain conditions, including not being accompanied by supporters but permitted security personnel.

Joining Adhikari, BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh was also permitted to visit Sandeshkali after they were initially barred entry by the police, citing a challenge from the Bengal government against the High Court order.

Despite police obstruction, Adhikari voiced his intent to protest and take legal action against the interference.

This marks the third instance in the last eight days that Adhikari has faced obstruction in visiting the restive area, highlighting the ongoing tension and scrutiny surrounding the situation.

Sandeshkhali has been rocked by allegations of sexual exploitation and land grabbing, with several women accusing leaders of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), particularly Sheikh Shahjahan.

Shahjahan, who remains in hiding, faced accusations after a team from the Enforcement Directorate was attacked near his residence in January. Two of his associates, also TMC leaders, were subsequently arrested following complaints from women in the area.
