Guwahati, Feb 09: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma criticized Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Assam on January 22, the same day as the Ram temple consecration ceremony.

Sarma deemed Gandhi’s decision to visit Nagaon, a religiously sensitive district, on such a significant day as inappropriate and ill-timed.

While acknowledging that Gandhi witnessed aspects of good governance in Assam during his visit, Sarma questioned the rationale behind choosing the day of the Ram temple consecration ceremony for the visit, especially considering Gandhi’s refusal to attend the ceremony in Ayodhya.

Sarma raised concerns about the implications of Gandhi’s visit to a region with the potential for religious tensions on such a momentous occasion.

Given the religious sensitivity of the district and the potential for conflict, Sarma suggested that Gandhi should have reconsidered his visit to Assam on that particular day.

He reiterated the commitment of the state government to uphold law and order and ensure the safety and security of all citizens.

Sarma underscored the importance of responsible decision-making, especially concerning visits to regions with sensitive religious dynamics.

He urged political leaders to exercise caution and avoid actions that could potentially incite tensions or disrupt communal harmony.

Sarma emphasized the need for mutual respect and understanding among individuals from diverse religious backgrounds.

He called for greater sensitivity and discretion in political engagements, particularly on occasions of religious significance, to foster unity and social cohesion in Assam and beyond.
