International Yoga Day is observed annually on June 21st, serving as a worldwide platform to create awareness about the numerous benefits of practicing yoga. It was Prime Minister Narendra Modi who first proposed the idea during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly in September 2014. This year, the global celebration of International Yoga Day will be led by Prime Minister Modi at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The national celebration of Yoga Day will be spearheaded by Vice President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar, in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. The theme for Yoga Day 2023 is “Yoga For Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” which translates to “Yoga for the welfare of all in the form of One World-One Family.” This theme embodies the essence of yoga, emphasizing its unifying nature and its ability to bring people together.

During his address, PM Modi highlighted the massive participation of millions of people worldwide, who embraced the theme of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” affirming that yoga unites everyone as one global family. He emphasized the ancient definition of yoga as “yujyate anen iti yoga,” which means that which unites is yoga. PM Modi expressed that the widespread practice of yoga reflects the idea that the entire world is interconnected as one family.
