New Delhi, Dec 17: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla addressed MPs regarding the security lapse in Parliament on December 13, clarifying that the suspension of 13 opposition MPs, including nine from the Congress, is unrelated to the security breach.

In a letter to all MPs, Birla emphasized that the decision to suspend members is solely aimed at upholding the sanctity of the House, not as a consequence of the security incident.

He reminded MPs of the commitment made during the Parliament‘s new building inauguration to refrain from disruptive behaviour and stressed the importance of maintaining parliamentary decorum.

Birla informed MPs about the establishment of a high-level inquiry committee to investigate the security breach and a separate high-powered committee to review security aspects in the Parliament complex and develop a comprehensive plan to prevent future incidents.

The Lok Sabha Speaker expressed awareness that the public disapproves of inappropriate conduct and interruptions during parliamentary proceedings, underscoring the commitment to uphold the highest standards of decorum and dignity.

While acknowledging the need for strict action, Birla assured MPs that the inquiry committee’s report would be shared with the House, and the high-powered committee would work to enhance security measures in the Parliament complex.

He concluded the letter by reiterating the collective responsibility to ensure a respectful and orderly functioning of the parliamentary sessions.
