New Delhi, Jan 18: Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra, who faced expulsion as a Lok Sabha MP last year, has taken her case to the Delhi High Court, challenging a notice instructing her to vacate her government bungalow. The High Court is scheduled to hear the matter today.

Moitra received an eviction notice from the Directorate of Estates (DoE) on Tuesday, instructing her to vacate the bungalow immediately.

The bungalow had been allotted to her as an MP. Expelled from the Lok Sabha on December 8, 2023, she was given a deadline of January 7 to vacate the allotted residence following the cancellation of her allotment.

On January 8, the DoE issued a notice, giving her three days to respond regarding her failure to vacate the government accommodation. Another notice followed on January 12.

In response to the situation, on January 4, the Delhi High Court directed Moitra to approach the DoE, seeking permission to continue occupying the government accommodation allotted to her.

Justice Subramoniun Prasad, handling Moitra’s challenge to an official notice requiring her to vacate the government bungalow by January 7, acknowledged that rules permitted authorities to allow residents to overstay for up to six months under exceptional circumstances, with certain charges applicable.

The court emphasized that the Directorate of Estates should independently assess her case and make a decision.

Moitra faced expulsion from the Lok Sabha on December 8, 2023, after being found guilty of “unethical conduct.” The allegations included accepting gifts from businessman Darshan Hiranandani and sharing her user ID and password for the Parliament website with him.
