Malé, March 23: In a significant diplomatic move, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu has extended a hand of friendship to India, highlighting its pivotal role as the Maldives’ “closest ally.”
The President’s statements, come amid a period of strained relations, marked by a call for the repatriation of Indian military personnel stationed in the Maldives.
Muizzu’s change in tone was evident in his recent interview with local media, where he emphasised India’s crucial contributions to aid provision and project implementation within the Maldives.
Despite prior tensions, Muizzu left no doubt, affirming unequivocally that India would retain its status as the Maldives’ closest ally, as per reports by the Maldives news portal.

The thaw in relations follows the departure of the initial batch of Indian military personnel from the Maldives, aligning with Muizzu’s directive.
