Mamata Banerjee injured during the campaign; says conspiracy against her

Bengal, March 10: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee got injured during her campaign trial in Nandigram today, says conspiracy against her. She is being taken to Kolkata for treatment.

Sources say Mamata Banerjee has injured her foot and even received bruises on her face.

Speaking to reporters, Mamata Banerjee alleged she was “pushed” by someone and has claimed that there was a “conspiracy” against her.

She added that her foot was swollen and that she wants to go back home to see her doctor.

Mamata Banerjee also said she will complain about the incident to the Election Commission of India.

After the incident, Mamata Banerjee will be returning to Kolkata for treatment, ahead of schedule. She is scheduled to release the TMC manifesto at her Kalighat residence in Kolkata tomorrow.

Mamata Banerjee was injured after coming out of a temple in Nandigram. She was visiting the Kali Mandir in Shibrampur, following which she was injured.

She is on a two-day visit to the region for filing her nomination for the Nandigram seat, which she did earlier today.

The BJP, meanwhile, has called the episode a stunt to “get sympathy“. Reacting to Mamata Banerjee’s injury, BJP leader Arjun Singh said, “She is doing drama only. 300 police personnel are providing security to the CM. She is doing this to get sympathy. If she was really attacked, why didn’t the police arrest the person who did it? We have been saying it since the start that law and order is a big problem in the state.”

Series of Events:

  • Abhishek Banerjee reached SSKM hospital where Mamata was rushed to after being injured in Nandigram.
  • West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar reached SSKM hospital to visit Mamata Banerjee. TMC supporter chants the slogan of ‘Go back’ in front of the Governor.
  • Senior party leader and minister Sadhan Pande along with TMC MP Derek O’Brien visit CM.
  • Extreme chaos and agitation with party flags in hospital premises.
  • Governor left the hospital at around 10 PM. Again ‘go back’ slogan and anti-BJP slogan were being chanted.

Mamata Banerjee files nomination from Nandigram

Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday filed her nomination for the Nandigram assembly seat, where she will take on her former protege and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari and exuded confidence of winning it saying she has never returned empty-handed from the land of anti-farm land acquisition movement.

Accompanied by TMC president Subrata Bakshi, Mamata Banerjee filed her papers at the Haldia sub-divisional office after taking part in a 2-km roadshow. She offered prayers at a temple before filing her nomination, and at another after doing so.

I am confident about my victory from the Nandigram assembly seat. I could have easily contested from Bhawanipur seat (which she represents).”

When I had visited Nandigram in January, there was no MLA from here as the sitting MLA had resigned. I looked at the faces of the common people and decided to contest from here,” she said after filing her paper.

The little known rural area, which had witnessed one of the bloodiest movements against the government’s acquisition of cultivable land for industrialization, had then changed the political landscape of West Bengal.

Now after more than a decade of peace, Nandigram, home to 70 per cent Hindus and 30 per cent of Muslims, is witnessing political and communal polarization.

The Muslims are firmly behind TMC that has controlled the area for the last 15 years.

The constituency mainly comprises two blocks — Nandigram I and Nandigram II — with the first having 30 per minority population and the second almost 15 per cent.

The election in Nandigram is slated to be held on April 1.
