Thoubal, Jan 24: A Manipur BJP leader L Rameshwor Singh was shot dead by two armed assailants near his residence on Tuesday. The gunmen fired two bullets targeting the BJP leader.

A search operation to nab the accused has been initiated, Thoubal district police said.

“Anguished to learn about the murder of L Rameshwor Singh, State Convenor of Ex-Servicemen Cell. We strongly condemned this inhumane act. The perpetrators of this heinous crime must be brought to justice and punished accordingly,” BJP’s Manipur wing tweeted.

Police said the incident took place between 10.30 and 11.30 am.

The 50-year-old Singh, who received bullets in his chest was rushed to a private hospital but succumbed to his injury at around 1 pm.

“We are not in a position to say who is behind this at this moment,” a top Manipur police officer said.

A source said that at least three gunmen were seen in an SUV without any registration number.
