Imphal, May 08: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh revealed on Wednesday that the government has identified a total of 5,457 illegal immigrants in the state.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), CM Singh announced that as of May 7th, 2024, Kamjong district in Manipur has reported 5,457 cases of illegal immigration.

“Biometric data of 5,173 illegal immigrants has been collected thus far,” mentioned CM Singh in the post.

He further stated that the deportation process is in progress and assured that the government is extending humanitarian assistance to all detected illegal immigrants.

“Despite the gravity of the situation, we are addressing it with the utmost sensitivity,” emphasized the Manipur CM.

This revelation comes against the backdrop of mounting concerns regarding illegal immigration in India.

The Indian government has been actively pursuing measures to identify and repatriate illegal immigrants, including the rollout of a National Register of Citizens (NRC).
