New Delhi, Aug 07: A delegation from the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) is scheduled to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah today to discuss the pressing issue of finding a suitable burial site for the 35 deceased Kukis in Manipur. The meeting comes in the wake of a recent order by the Manipur High Court, directing all concerned parties to maintain the status quo ante of the disputed land and seek an amicable settlement for the sensitive matter.
The situation in Manipur has been tense following the tragic incident that claimed the lives of 35 Kukis, a tribal community indigenous to the region. The deceased Kukis were killed in an unfortunate incident, and their burial has become a contentious issue, further exacerbating existing tensions in the state.
The Manipur High Court’s order, issued on August 3, stems from Public Interest Litigation (PIL) No. 33 of 2023, filed by the International Meeteis Forum against the State of Manipur and others. The private respondents and representatives of the Kuki-Zo community have also been granted the liberty to apply for land allotment for burial purposes within one week. This move by the court is seen as an attempt to offer a respectful resolution to the sensitive issue of burying the deceased Kukis.
