Bhubaneswar, Nov 20: Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district is preparing to warmly welcome its esteemed daughter, President Droupadi Murmu, as she embarks on a two-day visit to her home district. The entire region is adorned with banners and images expressing the community’s anticipation and joy for her return, marking her second visit since assuming the presidency.

President Murmu’s itinerary includes inaugurating the literary festival organized by the All India Santali Writers’ Association, opening a school for children, and unveiling a skill training center for the youth in the district. Additionally, she will have the honor of flagging off three trains and inaugurating a new postal division.

Muna Pratihari, a social activist, shared optimism about the President’s visit, stating, “The visit of the President will bring new development to the area. The district, being a tribal-dominated area, remains backward. However, things have been swiftly changed after she became the President. Several developmental programmes have been initiated in the district.”

As part of the scheduled program, President Murmu will inaugurate the new Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) campus in Kuliana, located approximately 15km from Baripada, the district headquarters of Mayurbhanj.

The school, with a budget of Rs 38 crore sanctioned by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, was constructed by Hindustan Steel Construction Ltd (HSCL). The Kuliana EMRS campus spans about 12 acres and features 16 classrooms to accommodate 480 students, including 240 girls and 240 boys.

The EMRS initiative, a flagship scheme of the Government of India, aims to provide quality education to tribal students. In 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the scheme, sanctioning 452 new EMRS, one in every tribal block with 50% or more ST population. Notably, Mayurbhanj district boasts 19 schools, the highest for any district in India.

In addition to inaugurating the EMRS, President Murmu will attend the inaugural session of the 36th Annual Conference and Literary Festival of All India Santali Writers’ Association at Baripada.

On the second day of her visit, President Murmu will inaugurate a Skill Training Centre in Pahadpur village, her in-laws’ village. She will also visit Badampahar Railway Station to flag off three new trains and lay the foundation stone for the redevelopment of the Badampahar railway station.
