Shillong, May 11: The Meghalaya government has launched an investigation into allegations against the state’s Director General of Police (DGP), Lajja Ram Bishnoi, regarding the use of a fake number plate on his vehicle, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong disclosed.

According to Tynsong, an FIR was filed the previous day, accusing the top cop of misusing and tampering with his vehicle’s registration number plate. He confirmed that a case has been registered, and the investigation is in its early stages.

Tynsong urged patience, emphasizing the need for the investigation to unfold before any conclusions are drawn, after which appropriate legal action will be taken.

Regarding potential consequences for the DGP, Tynsong declined to speculate, stating that their responsibility is to address the FIR.

While acknowledging the attention the government has given to the case, he cautioned against preemptive judgments as the investigation progresses.

Tynsong emphasized that the findings of the investigation will be presented to the court via an affidavit, allowing the judiciary to determine any wrongdoing.

Regarding the fate of members of a police inquiry committee previously established to probe a vehicle scam, Tynsong refrained from commenting.

He explained that the FIR filer has linked it to an older case still awaiting a court decision, leaving the matter for judicial resolution.

Former Assistant Inspector General GK Iangrai filed the FIR against Bishnoi on May 9, alleging the misuse and tampering of his vehicle’s number plate.

According to Iangrai, Bishnoi arrived in Shillong on May 17, 2022, to assume the DGP role, using a white Kia Carnival registered with the Assam government but allegedly swapping its number plate with that of a Verna.
