Shillong, Jan 11: Ahead of the polls, Meghalaya Trinamool Congress (TMC) launched an official campaign song in Khasi and Garo Languages.

All India Trinamool Congress MP in Rajya Sabha Derek O’Brien was present on the occasion of launching the song – ‘Hoi Kiw Haka TMC’ for the Meghalaya Assembly Election campaign 2023.

Last week; Meghalaya Trinamool Congress (TMC) announced the first list of candidates for the upcoming state polls due in the next two months.

State president Charles Pyngrope, and Trinamool Congress Legislature Party leader Mukul Sangma announced the names of candidates for 52 out of 60 Assembly constituencies at the state party office.

West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee visited the state in December 2022 and is scheduled to return on January 17, 2023, for an election campaign.

Trinamool Congress is now Meghalaya’s main opposition party in its 60-member assembly by virtue of the defection of 12 of the 17 Congress MLAs, including former chief minister Mukul Sangma in November 2021. However, one of the 12 resigned from the assembly and also from the party last month, reducing the TMC’s strength in the House to 11.

Besides Tripura and Assam, Meghalaya is one of the northeastern states where the TMC is trying to make inroads. The party had also contested the assembly election in Manipur in 2012.
